The results from long-standing research of the taxonomic composition of planktonic algae playing a dominant role in the formation of a bioluminescence field in the Black Sea are presented. It is shown that characteristics of luminous radiation of dinoflagellates can serve as a sensitive indicator of the degree of their resistance to the influencing anthropogenic factors and as an express index of the regional contamination in the sea environment.
